Why Detergent Choice Matters More Than Cycle Length
The chemistry of a detergent determines what it removes and what it damages, and enzyme content in particular decides whether wool and silk survive the wash.

Laundry attention tends to go to programme selection, but the detergent does most of the work and most of the damage. Its composition matters more than the cycle it runs in.
Enzymes are targeted and indiscriminate
Biological detergents contain enzymes that break down specific soil types: proteases for protein stains, amylases for starches, lipases for fats. They are highly effective at low temperatures.
Proteases break down protein, and wool and silk are protein fibres. A biological detergent will slowly digest them, which shows as thinning, dullness and eventual holes.
This is the single most consequential detergent decision. Anything made of wool, cashmere, silk or other animal fibres needs a non-biological or specifically wool-safe formulation.
Alkalinity does the heavy lifting and the harm
Standard detergents are alkaline, which helps lift soil and emulsify oils. Wool and silk prefer near-neutral conditions and are damaged by prolonged alkaline exposure.
Wool detergents are formulated close to neutral for exactly this reason. They clean less aggressively, which is appropriate for garments that are rarely heavily soiled.
Cotton and linen tolerate alkalinity well, which is why the same detergent that ruins a jumper is entirely correct for bedding and shirts.
Optical brighteners are a coating, not cleaning
Many detergents contain fluorescent compounds that absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as blue, making whites appear whiter. Nothing has been removed; a layer has been added.
On dark and coloured garments this builds up as a slight haze that dulls the colour over repeated washes. Detergents formulated for darks omit these compounds.
The effect is gradual and easy to attribute to fading. Switching to a brightener-free detergent on dark clothing is a small change with a visible outcome over a season.
Dosing errors persist in the fabric
Overdosing is the most common laundry mistake. Excess detergent is not fully rinsed out, and the residue attracts soil, stiffens fabric and can irritate skin.
Soft water requires considerably less detergent than hard water, and dosing instructions assume an average. In a soft-water area the recommended amount is usually too much.
Residue also traps odour, which produces the counterintuitive result of clothes smelling stale despite frequent washing. Reducing the dose often fixes it outright.
Cycle length is mostly about mechanical action
Longer cycles mean more agitation, which is what causes abrasion, pilling and felting. For lightly soiled clothing the extra time adds wear without adding much cleaning.
Where soil is genuinely heavy, temperature and detergent chemistry do more than duration. A shorter cycle with the correct detergent generally outperforms a long one with the wrong one.
Treated this way, the programme dial becomes a decision about how much mechanical stress a garment can take, and the detergent bottle becomes the decision about cleaning.
