Why Clothes Smell After They Have Been Washed
Odour surviving a wash is usually bacterial residue in synthetic fibres or detergent build-up, and both respond to different corrections than washing more often.

A garment that smells despite coming out of the machine is a common and specific failure. There are three usual causes, and none of them is resolved by washing it again.
Synthetics hold odour in a way naturals do not
Polyester and nylon are oleophilic: they attract and retain oils. Body oils bind into the fibre surface, and the bacteria that metabolise them produce the odour compounds.
Because the oils are held within the fibre rather than on it, ordinary washing at low temperature does not fully remove them. The residue remains and the smell returns with body heat.
This is why sports clothing develops persistent odour while cotton of the same age does not. It is a fibre property rather than a hygiene failure.
Detergent residue traps what it should remove
Overdosing leaves surfactant in the fabric, and that residue is sticky. It holds soil and oils against the fibre through subsequent washes rather than releasing them.
Fabric conditioner does the same deliberately, coating fibres to soften them. On synthetics and on towels it reduces absorbency and gives bacteria a surface to sit in.
Reducing the dose and stopping conditioner on affected garments is the first correction to try, because it is free and it addresses the most common cause.
The machine itself develops a biofilm
Low-temperature washing does not sterilise the machine. Detergent residue, oils and moisture accumulate in the drum seal, the dispenser and the drain, supporting a bacterial film.
Clothes then pick up odour from the machine rather than carrying it in. The sign is that everything smells slightly the same, regardless of what it is.
Running an empty hot cycle periodically, leaving the door open to dry, and cleaning the seal and dispenser addresses it. The effect on laundry is usually immediate.
Slow drying grows the problem
Fabric left damp for many hours in still air supports bacterial growth directly. The characteristic musty smell is the product of that growth, not of the wash.
Airflow matters more than heat. A garment drying in a warm but unventilated room takes longer to fall below the moisture level where growth stops than one in cool moving air.
Overloading the machine contributes, because clothes emerge holding more water and dry more slowly. A smaller load spins drier and dries faster.
Resetting a garment takes a specific approach
An accumulated odour usually needs a strip wash: no detergent, hot water where the fabric allows, and a long cycle to flush out residue rather than add more.
A soak in a solution containing an oxygen-based product afterwards addresses remaining bacteria. The order matters, because residue shields the fibre from anything applied over it.
Once reset, the garment stays clear if the dose is corrected and drying is fast. Repeating the same routine that produced the problem simply rebuilds it.
