Why Black Garments Rarely Match Each Other
Two black items from different sources are almost never the same black, because the dye chemistry required depends on the fiber it is applied to.

A black jacket and black pants worn together often look subtly wrong. The reason is that black is not one color in practice, and the differences come from the fiber underneath.
Different fibers take different dyes
Dye chemistry is fiber-specific. Cotton is dyed with one class of dyes, wool and silk with another, polyester with another again.
Each class produces a slightly different black, because none of them absorbs the full visible spectrum evenly.
The result is that a cotton black tends to read slightly warm, a polyester black slightly cool and flat, and a wool black deeper than either.
Surface texture changes how black reads
Black appears dark because the surface absorbs nearly all incoming light, and how much escapes depends on the texture.
A smooth, shiny surface reflects light specularly, so the fabric looks lighter and can appear gray in bright conditions.
A matte, textured surface traps light between fibers and reads as deeper black. This is why velvet and brushed wool look blacker than a satin of exactly the same dye.
Fading proceeds at different rates
Even two garments dyed identically diverge with use, because washing, light and abrasion remove dye at rates determined by fiber and construction.
A frequently washed cotton item loses depth quickly, while a rarely cleaned wool one holds its color for years.
So a set that matched when new drifts apart, and the drift is usually toward brown or gray depending on which dye class was used.
Matching across fibers is close to impossible
The practical consequence is that assembling a black outfit from separates bought at different times and in different materials will produce visible mismatch.
Suiting is sold as a matched set for exactly this reason: jacket and trousers are cut from the same bolt, dyed in the same lot.
Where a set is not available, the workable approach is to lean into the difference rather than fight it, pairing distinctly different textures so the variation reads as deliberate.
Lighting decides whether it shows
Mismatched blacks are most obvious under bright, even light with a broad spectrum, which is why the problem appears outdoors and in daylight offices.
Under warm, dim indoor light the differences compress and the outfit reads as uniformly dark.
Checking a black-on-black combination in daylight before leaving is therefore the only reliable test, and a bathroom mirror under one warm bulb will not reveal it.
