Water Hardness And What It Does To Laundry

Dissolved minerals in hard water react with detergent to form deposits that stiffen fabric and dull colour, which explains regional differences in laundry results.

The same detergent, machine and garments produce different results in different places. The variable is the water, and its mineral content changes both cleaning and long-term fabric condition.

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium

Water passing through chalk and limestone picks up calcium and magnesium ions. The quantity varies regionally and is measured as hardness, ranging from very soft to very hard.

These ions are chemically reactive in the wash. They combine with the anionic surfactants in detergent to form insoluble compounds, which is the origin of soap scum.

That reaction consumes detergent. A portion of every dose in hard water is neutralised before it can act on soil, which is why hard-water dosing recommendations are higher.

The deposits stay in the fabric

The insoluble compounds formed are not fully rinsed away. They deposit within the weave, where they build up over repeated washes.

The accumulation stiffens fabric, which is why towels in hard-water areas become scratchy. It also scatters light, dulling dark colours and giving whites a grey cast.

Because it develops gradually, it is usually attributed to the age of the garment. Washing the same items in soft water for a few cycles reverses part of it and demonstrates the cause.

Soft water has the opposite problem

With few competing ions, detergent works at full strength, so the standard dose is an overdose. Excess surfactant remains in the fabric after rinsing.

That residue is why clothes in soft-water areas can feel slippery or fail to rinse clean, and why they may hold odour despite frequent washing.

Reducing the dose substantially is the correct response. Manufacturers publish separate guidance for soft water, and it is usually a fraction of the standard amount.

Water softeners and additives act differently

A plumbed softener exchanges the hardness ions for sodium before the water reaches the machine, which addresses the cause throughout the household.

In-wash additives sequester the ions instead, holding them so they cannot react with detergent. They work only in that cycle and add cost each time.

Higher-temperature washes also drive limescale out of solution onto the heating element, which is a machine problem rather than a fabric one but shares the same origin.

Diagnosing it takes one observation

The simplest test is whether detergent lathers readily in a small amount of water. Poor lathering with a normal dose indicates hardness reliably enough for practical purposes.

Local water suppliers publish hardness figures, which gives a precise answer and tells you which dosing column on the packaging applies.

Adjusting the dose to actual hardness is free and fixes stiff towels, dull darks and residue smells more often than changing detergent brand does.
