The Spare Set Every Small Wardrobe Needs
Tightly edited wardrobes fail on the day something is spilled or torn, and holding deliberate redundancy in two or three categories prevents the whole system stalling.

A wardrobe reduced to exactly what is needed has no tolerance for accident. One spill, one broken zip, and the day's outfit has no replacement anywhere on the rail.
Redundancy is not the same as excess
Excess is garments that are never worn. Redundancy is a second copy of something worn constantly, held so that the failure of one does not stop the system.
The distinction matters because wardrobe reduction tends to treat all duplication as waste. Duplication of the things that carry the most load is the opposite of waste.
Engineers build redundancy into anything that must not fail. A wardrobe is not critical infrastructure, but the reasoning transfers cleanly at a much smaller scale.
The categories that need a spare
Not everything needs backing up. The candidates are the garments worn most often, hardest to replace quickly, and most likely to be taken out of service by an accident.
In most wardrobes that means a work shirt or top, a pair of trousers, and outerwear if there is only one coat. Those three cover nearly all realistic failures.
Accessories mostly do not need spares, with the exception of anything genuinely required daily. A single belt failing is inconvenient; a single pair of glasses failing is not.
Identical is better than similar
A spare works best when it is the same garment, not merely a comparable one. Identical items mean the substitution is invisible and no other part of the outfit changes.
This is also the argument for buying two when something fits unusually well. Sizing and cut change between production runs, and the same item a year later is often not the same.
Rotating both copies rather than keeping one pristine spreads the wear. Two garments alternated last considerably longer than one worn continuously and one stored unused.
Failures cluster around laundry
The most common reason a garment is unavailable is not damage but the wash cycle. Any wardrobe sized to the number of wears between washes has no margin at all.
Adding one item to each frequently-worn category creates that margin. It costs little and removes the recurring problem of needing something that is currently wet.
This is why the practical minimum for a category is usually one more than the theoretical minimum. The theoretical figure assumes availability that laundry reliably interrupts.
The spare needs a rule to stay a spare
Redundancy erodes quietly. The spare gets worn, then a second spare appears, and within a year the wardrobe has drifted back to its original size without any decision being made.
Keeping the count fixed per category is what prevents that. A new item entering a category means an old one leaves it, regardless of how reasonable the addition seems.
Held to that rule, redundancy is a stable feature rather than the first step in a return to a full wardrobe. The size stays deliberate and the system stops stalling.
