Rubber, Leather And The Sole For Your Sidewalk
Sole material determines grip, wear rate and whether a shoe is comfortable on concrete, and the right choice depends on the surfaces a person actually walks on.

The upper gets the attention and the sole determines the experience. Which material is underfoot decides grip, durability and how a day of walking feels.
Leather soles are stiff and permeable
A leather sole is a piece of thick hide, usually vegetable tanned for firmness. It breaks in to the shape of the foot and allows some moisture to pass through.
It is also slick when new and dangerously so when wet, since smooth leather on a wet painted surface or polished floor offers very little friction.
Wear is steady and predictable, and because the sole is stitched rather than glued in better construction, it can be replaced repeatedly without touching the upper.
Rubber trades repairability for grip
Rubber compounds grip wet surfaces far better and resist water rather than absorbing it, which matters on city sidewalks and in weather.
Softer compounds grip more and wear faster; harder ones last longer and slide more. Manufacturers choose a point on that spectrum according to the shoe's purpose.
Whether a rubber sole can be replaced depends on how it was attached. A stitched or welted rubber sole is as repairable as leather; a cemented one usually is not.
Concrete is harder on feet than it looks
Most American walking happens on concrete and asphalt, which have no give at all. Every step returns the full force of impact to the foot.
A thin, stiff sole transmits that directly, which is why leather-soled dress shoes become uncomfortable over a long day in a city in a way they do not on carpet.
Some cushioning between foot and pavement, whether from a rubber sole, a midsole layer or a substantial insole, changes the experience of the same distance considerably.
Foam behaves differently again
Athletic shoes use foam midsoles that compress to absorb impact and rebound. This provides cushioning that neither leather nor solid rubber can.
Foam degrades with compression cycles rather than abrasion, so the sole can look fine while having lost most of its function.
That failure mode is invisible, which is why athletic shoes are often worn long past the point where they are doing anything for the wearer.
Matching the sole to the week
The useful question is not which sole is best but which surfaces a person crosses most and in what weather.
Someone driving to a parking garage and walking indoors can wear a leather sole comfortably for years. Someone walking a mile each way on wet sidewalks cannot.
Rubber-soled versions of formal shoes exist for exactly this reason, and they solve a real problem rather than representing a compromise on the shoe's character.
