How shoes are built, and why it determines whether they can be repaired
The difference between a shoe you resole for a decade and one you throw away in eighteen months is a single construction decision made in the factory, and it is visible if you know where to look.

The sole has to be attached to the upper somehow. How that is done determines almost everything about a shoe's lifespan, comfort, weight, water resistance and price.
Cemented
The sole is glued to the upper. Fast, cheap, produces a light and flexible shoe, and accounts for the overwhelming majority of footwear made.
The limitation is repair. When the sole wears through or the glue fails, the shoe is generally finished. Some cobblers can re-glue a cemented sole, and the result is rarely as good and often does not last.
How to identify: no stitching visible around the edge of the sole. The upper appears to disappear directly into the sole.
Blake stitched
A single line of stitching passes through the insole, the upper and the outsole, from inside the shoe. Invented for machine production by Lyman Blake in the 1850s.
The result is slim, flexible and light, with a close-cut sole — which is why it is the standard for Italian dress shoes.
It can be resoled, but the machine required (a Blake machine) is uncommon, so not every cobbler can do it. Because the stitching passes right through, there is a direct channel from outside to inside, making Blake shoes less water resistant.
How to identify: a line of stitching visible on the inside of the shoe, around the edge of the insole under the removable sock liner.
Goodyear welted
The construction that generates the most enthusiasm, and it deserves most of it.
A strip of leather — the welt — is stitched to the upper and to a rib on the underside of the insole. The outsole is then stitched to the welt. The space between insole and outsole is filled with cork, which compresses over time and moulds to the foot.
Crucially, the outsole is attached to the welt rather than to the upper. Resoling means cutting the outsole stitching and sewing on a new one — the upper is never disturbed. A well-made Goodyear welted shoe can be resoled many times.
The trade-offs are real: heavier, stiffer, a longer break-in period, and more expensive.
How to identify: a line of stitching around the outside edge of the sole, and a visible welt — a strip standing slightly proud between upper and sole.
Some cemented shoes have decorative stitching around the edge that does nothing. Check by looking at where the stitching goes — a real welt has stitching in the welt strip and a distinct line where the outsole is attached. If the stitching sits in a groove that does not correspond to any structural join, or if the "welt" appears moulded from the same piece as the sole, it is decoration.
Norwegian and storm welt
Variations designed for weather resistance, with the welt stitched outward and upward for a more watertight join. Heavier, more rugged, distinctive stitching visible on the upper. Common on country shoes and boots.
Moccasin construction
The upper wraps under the foot and a plug is stitched in on top. Genuinely soft and flexible, used for driving shoes, loafers and boat shoes. True moccasins are difficult to resole; many shoes described as moccasins are actually cemented with a decorative apron.
Vulcanised
A rubber sole is bonded to the upper under heat and pressure. Used for trainers and canvas shoes. Cheap, flexible, essentially unrepairable.
What to buy
The construction should follow the use.
Goodyear welted for shoes you want to keep for a decade and are willing to maintain — work shoes, boots, anything worn in weather.
Blake for dress shoes where slimness matters and conditions are dry.
Cemented for anything where lightness, flexibility or price is the priority, and accepted as a limited-life item.
The mistake is paying a premium price for a cemented shoe. Above a certain price point, construction should be part of what you are buying.
Making them last
Rest them. Leather absorbs a substantial amount of moisture from a foot over a day and needs 24 hours to dry properly. Wearing the same shoes daily roughly halves their life. Two pairs alternated last more than twice as long as one pair worn continuously.
Use cedar shoe trees, inserted while the shoe is still warm. They hold the shape, prevent the creases across the vamp from cracking, and absorb moisture.
Condition and polish. Cream conditions and colours; wax polishes and protects. Neither needs doing often — every ten to fifteen wears is plenty.
Add a rubber topy or protective half-sole to a new leather sole if you walk on pavements. It costs little, is invisible, and doubles the life of the sole.
Resole before the welt is damaged. This is the important one. Once the sole wears through and the welt stitching is compromised, the repair becomes major or impossible. Check the soles periodically and take them in early.
