Leather Types And How Each One Ages
The grade and finish of a leather determine whether it develops character or degrades, and the terms used on labels describe processing rather than quality directly.

Leather is described with a small vocabulary that is used loosely. The terms do have precise meanings, and they predict how a bag, belt or shoe will look after several years.
The grain layer is what matters
A hide's outer surface, the grain, contains the densest and strongest fibres. Full-grain leather retains it intact, including any natural marks from the animal's life.
Top-grain has had the surface sanded to remove imperfections and is then finished. It looks more uniform and is slightly weaker, because the strongest fibres have been partly removed.
Below that, the split is the fibrous inner layer with no grain at all. It has no natural surface, so anything made from it relies entirely on an applied coating.
Finish decides whether it develops a patina
Aniline leather is dyed through without a pigment coating, so the grain shows and the surface absorbs oils from handling. This is what produces darkening and depth over time.
Pigmented or corrected-grain leather carries an opaque surface layer. It is far more resistant to staining and to water, and it does not develop patina because nothing reaches the fibre.
Neither is better in the abstract. A coated finish is the sensible choice where a garment or bag faces rain and dirt, and an uncoated one where appearance over years is the point.
Tanning changes the behaviour
Vegetable tanning uses plant tannins over weeks and produces firm leather that darkens strongly with light and oil. It is used where structure is wanted, such as belts and soles.
Chrome tanning is faster and produces softer, more flexible, more water-resistant leather. Most footwear uppers and garment leathers are chrome tanned for exactly those properties.
The tannage is rarely stated on a label but is inferable. Firm leather that darkens dramatically is usually vegetable tanned; soft, supple, colour-stable leather is usually not.
Suede and nubuck are surfaces, not grades
Nubuck is grain leather buffed to raise a light nap, so it retains the strength of the grain. Suede is the flesh side or a split, which is weaker and more absorbent.
Both stain readily because the raised fibres hold liquid. Protective sprays reduce this but need reapplying, and neither surface tolerates the conditioning creams used on smooth leather.
They wear by flattening rather than cracking. Brushing restores the nap, and doing it regularly is the whole of their maintenance.
Bonded leather is a different material
Bonded leather is shredded leather fibre mixed with adhesive and pressed onto a backing, then given a printed grain. It is a composite that contains leather rather than a leather.
It fails by delaminating: the surface layer cracks and peels away from the backing, which cannot be repaired or conditioned back.
Identifying it takes a look at a cut edge, where the uniform pressed core is visible. That check takes a second and is the most useful thing to do before buying anything described only as "genuine leather".
