Gloves: Fit, Lining And The Hand That Loses Dexterity
A glove has to balance warmth against the ability to use your hands, and the trade is decided almost entirely by insulation thickness and how the palm is cut.

Gloves fail in a specific way: they are warm and useless, or usable and cold. The balance is set by construction decisions that are visible before buying.
Warmth comes from trapped air, which needs bulk
Insulation works by holding still air, and holding more air requires more thickness. There is no way around that relationship at a given material.
Thickness on the palm and fingers is exactly what prevents gripping, pinching and manipulating objects, so warmth and dexterity trade against each other directly.
Better gloves manage the trade by distributing insulation unevenly, putting more on the back of the hand where it does not interfere and less on the palm.
Fingers lose heat faster than anything else
Fingers have a large surface area relative to their volume and sit at the end of the circulatory system, so they cool quickly and rewarm slowly.
This is why mittens outperform gloves at the same insulation thickness. Fingers sharing one compartment warm each other rather than each radiating separately.
The dexterity cost of a mitten is total, which is why the useful compromise is often a thin glove worn inside a mitten shell that can be removed for a task.
Fit that is too tight defeats the insulation
A glove compressed against the skin has no air layer, and a tight glove also restricts blood flow to the fingers.
Both effects make a snug glove colder than a slightly loose one of identical construction, which is counterintuitive and a common buying error.
The correct fit has a small amount of room at the fingertips and enough width across the palm to close a fist without the material binding.
Leather and textile do different jobs
Leather blocks wind well, conforms to the hand with wear, and grips reliably, but it absorbs water and stiffens as it dries unless treated.
Synthetic shells shed water and dry quickly, at the cost of a less precise fit and a surface that grips less securely on smooth objects.
Many gloves combine them, putting leather on the palm for grip and durability and textile on the back for weight and weather resistance.
Cuffs decide where the cold gets in
A short cuff leaves a gap at the wrist whenever the arm is raised, and the wrist is a place where blood runs close to the surface.
A gauntlet cuff worn over a sleeve seals that gap but is awkward under a fitted coat, while a short cuff worn under a sleeve depends on the sleeve being long enough.
Deciding which arrangement a glove is designed for, and matching it to the outerwear it will be worn with, resolves more cold-hand complaints than adding insulation does.
