Fitting A Coat Over What Goes Underneath
Outerwear must be sized around the layers it will cover, which means the fitting has to be done with those layers on rather than over a shirt.

Coats are frequently bought in warm shops over light clothing and worn in cold weather over several layers. The fitting conditions are the opposite of the wearing conditions.
Layers consume more room than expected
A jumper and a jacket under a coat add several centimetres to the chest measurement and considerably more bulk at the shoulders and upper arms.
That bulk is not evenly distributed. It concentrates exactly where a coat is already tightest, which is why a coat that fits over a shirt binds over knitwear.
The only reliable approach is to try outerwear wearing what will actually go under it. This is inconvenient and it removes almost all of the guesswork.
The armhole is the first failure point
A coat's armhole must clear the sleeve of everything beneath it. Where it does not, the arm cannot be raised and the whole coat lifts with the shoulder.
Outerwear patterns therefore use lower, wider armholes than tailoring does. A coat with a high, close armhole is cut as a jacket and will not accept layers.
Testing this means reaching forward and up while wearing the intended layers. A coat that passes that test will not become uncomfortable in use.
Length interacts with what is beneath
A coat should be longer than the jacket worn under it, because a jacket hem appearing below a coat hem reads as an error and is visible from a distance.
This sets a practical minimum length for anyone who wears tailoring. For those who do not, shorter outerwear is entirely workable and considerably more practical.
Sleeve length follows the same logic, and outerwear sleeves need to be longer than jacket sleeves to cover them fully when the arm is bent.
Fastened and unfastened are different fits
A coat worn open drapes from the shoulders and can be relatively generous. Worn fastened, it must close over everything without strain across the chest and back.
Double-breasted styles overlap more, so they require additional room to close. Single-breasted coats show tension at the button instead, which is easier to detect.
Fitting fastened is the stricter test and the correct one. A coat that only works open has effectively lost its main function in cold weather.
Too much room costs warmth
Insulation works by trapping air close to the body. A coat several sizes too large circulates air with movement, which removes warmth rather than retaining it.
The target is enough room for the intended layers with a small margin, and no more. A coat that is loose over everything is a wind tunnel with a lining.
This is the argument against buying outerwear oversized as a precaution. The correct margin is specific, and both errors reduce the coat's effectiveness in opposite ways.
