Eyewear Frames That Survive Being Sat On
Frame material determines whether glasses bend and recover, snap outright, or slowly lose their adjustment, and each behaves differently under the same accident.

Eyeglass frames fail in predictable ways depending on what they are made from. The material also determines whether an optician can adjust them back into shape.
Acetate is molded and can be reheated
Acetate is a plastic cut from sheet and shaped with heat. It holds color throughout rather than on the surface, so scratches do not expose a different shade underneath.
Because heat shaped it originally, gentle heat allows an optician to reshape the temples and adjust fit, which is why acetate frames can be tuned repeatedly.
Its failure mode is a clean break rather than a bend, usually at the thinnest section around the hinge or the bridge, and a break there is rarely repairable.
Metal frames bend rather than snap
Thin metal frames deform under force and stay deformed, which is a better outcome than breaking because the shape can be corrected.
Repeated bending in the same place work-hardens the metal, so a frame straightened many times eventually becomes brittle at that point and fails.
Soldered joints are the other weak point, and a break at a solder joint can sometimes be redone, which is not true of a plastic fracture.
Memory alloys return to shape on their own
Certain titanium-based alloys are elastic well beyond the point where ordinary metal would take a permanent set, so they spring back after severe distortion.
This makes them the most tolerant of being sat on or crushed in a bag, and the least likely to need adjustment after an accident.
The trade is that the same springiness makes them difficult to adjust deliberately, so achieving a precise fit is harder than with a conventional frame.
Hinges account for most failures
The hinge takes stress every time the glasses are opened, and it is the smallest and most highly loaded assembly on the frame.
Screwed hinges loosen over time and can be tightened, which is a maintenance task rather than a fault. Spring-loaded hinges tolerate wider opening but contain more parts that can seize.
Hinges molded or riveted directly into plastic without a metal core are the least durable arrangement, and when they pull out the frame is finished.
Fit determines how much force the frame takes
A frame that fits well sits on the bridge and rests lightly against the sides of the head, so removing it does not require stretching.
One that is too narrow is being flexed every time it goes on, which fatigues the hinges and the front continuously rather than only during accidents.
Getting the width right at purchase therefore does more for frame longevity than material choice, because it removes the load that causes most of the wear.
