Dyeing, Fading And Why Black Goes Grey
Dark dyes sit heavily on the fibre surface and are removed by abrasion and detergent, which is why black fades faster and more visibly than any other colour.

Black garments lose their depth faster than coloured ones, and the reason is not that black dye is weaker. It is that black requires more dye and shows its loss more clearly.
Depth of shade requires quantity of dye
Producing black means absorbing nearly all visible light, which requires a very high concentration of dye in and on the fibre.
Much of that dye sits at or near the surface rather than penetrating fully. Surface dye is the portion most easily removed by friction and washing.
A pale colour uses far less dye, and losing a small amount changes the shade slightly. Losing the same amount from black changes it visibly toward grey.
Abrasion removes dyed fibre, not just dye
Washing and wear abrade fibre ends off the surface. Those ends carry dye with them, and the freshly exposed fibre underneath is lighter.
This is why fading concentrates at high-friction points: seat, knees, cuffs, collar and anywhere a bag strap sits. The garment fades in a pattern that maps its use.
Turning garments inside out to wash moves the abrasion to the interior surface, which is a small change with a clear effect over a year.
Detergent chemistry attacks the bond
Dye is held to fibre by chemical bonds whose strength depends on dye class and fibre type. Alkaline conditions and high temperatures weaken many of those bonds.
Optical brighteners deposit a bluish-white film that sits over dark dye, producing a chalky cast that reads as fading even though no dye has been lost.
Detergents formulated for darks address both: lower alkalinity and no brighteners. The improvement is gradual and visible over a season rather than immediately.
Light does its own damage
Ultraviolet light breaks dye molecules directly. Garments dried in sun, or stored where light falls on them, fade in the exposed areas independently of any washing.
This is why a shoulder or a sleeve can be lighter than the rest of a garment that has been washed evenly throughout its life.
Drying in shade and storing away from windows removes the cause entirely. It costs nothing and it is the most commonly ignored preventive measure.
Redyeing works better on some fibres
Home dyeing can restore depth on cotton and other cellulose fibres, which accept the readily available dyes reasonably well.
Synthetics generally do not, because they require heat and conditions a domestic machine cannot reach. Blends dye partially, producing an uneven result.
Stitching is usually polyester even on cotton garments, so it stays its original colour. That visible seam line is the giveaway on almost every home-dyed item.
