Backpacks, Totes And What Weight Does To A Shoulder
How a bag distributes load determines whether it is comfortable, and the difference between a strap on one shoulder and a harness across both is larger than it looks.

Bag choice is usually made on appearance and capacity. Load distribution is what determines whether carrying the same weight is unremarkable or produces a sore shoulder by afternoon.
A single strap loads one side of the body
A tote or messenger bag hangs from one shoulder, so the entire weight is supported by a small area of muscle on that side.
The body compensates by raising that shoulder and leaning away, which loads the spine asymmetrically for as long as the bag is carried.
Over short distances this is unremarkable. Over a commute repeated daily it produces the specific one-sided discomfort that people attribute to the bag being heavy rather than to it being single-strapped.
Two straps halve the pressure and straighten the load
A backpack splits the same weight across both shoulders, so the pressure per unit of area is halved and the body stays upright.
Load also sits closer to the spine and higher on the back, which reduces the leverage the weight exerts and the effort required to counter it.
This is why a backpack carrying noticeably more feels lighter than a tote carrying less, and why the comparison surprises people who judge bags by capacity alone.
Strap width and padding change pressure, not weight
A wide, padded strap spreads the same load over more shoulder area, which lowers the pressure at any one point.
Thin straps concentrate force into a narrow band, which is where the sharp ache and the mark on the shoulder come from.
Padding also stops the strap from digging in as it flexes, though no amount of padding changes the fundamental asymmetry of a single-strap bag.
Where the weight sits inside the bag
A load packed low and away from the back swings and pulls, while the same load packed high and close to the body stays stable.
This is why bags with internal compartments carry better than open sacks: the structure prevents contents from settling into the bottom.
A laptop sleeve positioned against the back panel rather than at the outer face makes a measurable difference to how a full bag feels on a walk.
The bag's own construction has to hold up
Load concentrates at the points where straps meet the body of the bag, and that is where failures occur.
Bar-tack stitching, reinforcement patches or straps that continue around the base spread that stress into the fabric rather than into a few stitches.
A bag whose straps are attached to the outer fabric alone will eventually tear there regardless of how good the material is, which is worth checking before buying anything intended to carry weight daily.
