What "quality" actually means in clothing
The word covers at least four different properties that frequently trade off against each other. Being specific about which one you want is the difference between buying well and buying expensively.

Quality is used as though it were a single scale. It is not. At least four distinct properties travel under the word, and they frequently conflict.
The four properties
1. Durability. How long the garment survives use. Determined by fibre strength, yarn construction, fabric weight, stitch density and seam finishing.
2. Materials. The intrinsic properties of what it is made from — fineness, softness, lustre, hand. High-grade cashmere is a superb material and a fragile one.
3. Construction. How well it was made. Canvas versus fusing, pattern matching, seam finishing, hand-finished details.
4. Fit and design. Whether the pattern is well developed, whether the proportions work, whether it does what it is supposed to.
Fine materials are frequently less durable. A 140s two-ply shirt feels extraordinary and wears out considerably faster than a 100s. Cashmere is softer than lambswool and pills more.
Better construction can reduce apparent quality. A soft, unstructured jacket has less visible structure than a heavily fused one, and is better made.
Durability can compromise comfort. Heavy canvas and thick leather last for decades and are stiff for months.
Deciding which you want
The useful question is not "is this good quality" but "which kind of quality does this garment need?"
A work jacket, a winter coat, boots, a bag: durability first. Heavy fabric, strong construction, repairability. Fineness of material is largely irrelevant.
A scarf worn against the neck, a jumper for indoors: material first. Softness and hand matter more than surviving twenty years.
Tailoring: construction first. Canvas versus fusing determines whether the garment lasts and how it moulds.
Anything worn frequently: fit first. A perfectly made garment that does not fit will not be worn, which makes every other property irrelevant.
What is measurable in a shop
Fabric weight — pick it up, or read the GSM if listed.
Stitch density — count stitches per centimetre. 8–10 or more is good; 5–6 is not.
Seam finishing — turn it inside out.
Seam allowance — wide allows alteration, narrow does not.
Pattern matching — the most reliable indicator that a maker is not economising.
Grain — hold it up and check the side seams hang vertically.
Interlining — pinch and feel for separate layers.
Fibre and yarn — read the label; look for two-ply.
Pilling propensity — rub briskly between the palms.
Recovery — scrunch and release.
What is not measurable and matters
Labour conditions. Not visible in construction and not correlated with price. Certifications such as Fair Wear Foundation address it; inspection does not.
Environmental impact. Also invisible. Materials and certifications give partial information.
Longevity of the design. Whether you will still want to wear it. This is a judgement about the garment and about yourself, and it is the variable that most often determines actual lifespan.
The overrated indicators
Price. Correlates loosely and unreliably.
Brand. Correlates with consistency more than with construction.
Country of origin. Weakly informative at best, and frequently used as a proxy for assumptions that do not hold.
Weight alone. Heavy is generally more durable and heavy fusing and heavy poor fabric also exist.
"Handmade". Undefined and unregulated. Hand-finishing on specific elements is meaningful; the word on its own is not.
Quality that reveals itself only over time
Some properties cannot be assessed in a shop at all, which is worth acknowledging honestly.
Colourfastness. Whether a garment fades, bleeds onto other clothes, or goes patchy in sunlight. The only shop test is rubbing a damp white cloth on a hidden area to see whether dye transfers, and it catches only the worst cases.
Shrinkage. Pre-shrunk fabric is usually labelled and unlabelled natural fibres frequently shrink 3 to 5 per cent on first wash, and sometimes considerably more. This is why buying an unsanforised garment in your exact size produces something that no longer fits.
Elastic recovery. Whether knees bag, cuffs stretch out and waistbands go slack. Determined by fibre and construction, and only visible after weeks of wear. Elastane content is a warning sign for anything intended to last, since it degrades regardless of use.
Seam stability. Whether stitching holds under repeated stress at the underarm, the crotch and the shoulder — the three points that fail first in almost every garment.
The practical response is that a brand which has held up for you before is genuinely informative, and that this is the main reason brand loyalty in clothing is rational rather than sentimental.
The most useful reframing
Rather than asking whether something is good quality, ask: how long do I want this to last, and what will kill it first?
A t-shirt will be killed by pilling, thinning and neck stretch — so weight and yarn quality matter. A coat will be killed by lining failure, pilling and moths — so lining quality, fibre and care matter. Shoes will be killed by sole wear — so construction and repairability matter.
Identify the failure mode, buy against it, and ignore the rest of what the price tag is implying.
