Summer clothing: staying cool is a fabric problem
The instinct is to wear less. The better answer is loose, light, open-weave natural fabric — which is what people in genuinely hot climates have always worn.

The body cools primarily by evaporating sweat from the skin. Anything that helps evaporation helps you; anything that traps moisture against the skin makes you hotter.
Which means the relevant fabric properties are air permeability, moisture absorption and release, and how the fabric sits against the skin — not simply thickness.
Why loose beats tight
A garment held away from the skin allows air movement between fabric and body, which carries away heat and moisture. A garment clinging to the skin traps a layer of humid air.
This is why traditional hot-climate clothing across the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and Central America is loose and covering rather than minimal. Full coverage in a loose, light fabric protects from solar radiation while permitting airflow, which frequently beats exposed skin in direct sun.
The fabrics, ranked
Linen. The best hot-weather fabric there is. Highly absorbent, releases moisture quickly, has excellent air permeability because of its relatively open structure, and conducts heat away from the body efficiently — which is what produces the cool feel on contact. It creases immediately and permanently, which is the fibre behaving as designed rather than a fault.
Cotton, in the right weave. Absorbent and comfortable. The weave matters enormously: an open weave such as seersucker, voile, chambray or a loose plain weave breathes well; a dense poplin does not. Seersucker's puckered structure holds the fabric off the skin, which is precisely the point.
Tropical-weight wool. Counter-intuitive and genuinely excellent. High-twist open-weave wool in a light weight — sometimes called fresco — is breathable, absorbs moisture without feeling wet, resists creasing far better than linen and drapes properly. It is why lightweight wool suits work in summer and cotton ones frequently do not.
Silk. Light, breathable and absorbent. It water-marks readily from perspiration, which limits it for a hot day.
Hemp and ramie. Similar to linen, durable, less widely available.
Polyester and most synthetics. Hydrophobic, so they do not absorb sweat — they wick it to the surface, which works in technical sportswear designed for it and works badly in an ordinary shirt. They also trap air poorly at the fabric level and hold odour tenaciously.
Dense weaves in any fibre. A tightly woven cotton shirt breathes worse than an open-weave wool one.
Anything tight. Regardless of fibre.
Colour, and the surprising research
The intuition is that white reflects heat and black absorbs it, and therefore white is cooler.
It is more complicated. A frequently cited study of Bedouin robes found that black robes did not make the wearer hotter than white ones, because the additional heat absorbed by the black fabric was carried away by convection in the loose garment before it reached the skin — and the greater temperature differential actually increased air circulation.
The practical conclusion: in a loose garment, colour matters much less than fit and fabric. In a tight garment in direct sun, lighter colours are cooler.
Dark colours do have one practical advantage in heat: they show sweat marks far less than pale blue or grey, which is why navy and black are common in hot-climate uniforms.
Sun protection
Fabric provides sun protection and the amount varies enormously. UPF ratings exist for this, and the general rules are:
Tighter weaves block more UV than open ones — which conflicts directly with breathability, and is the fundamental trade-off in hot-weather clothing.
Darker colours block more UV than lighter.
Wet fabric transmits more UV than dry.
Stretched fabric transmits more than relaxed.
A dry, dark, tightly woven shirt offers substantial protection; a wet white t-shirt stretched over shoulders offers very little.
Practical assembly
Loose, long, light. A loose long-sleeved linen shirt is frequently cooler in direct sun than a t-shirt, and it protects the skin.
Open the neck. A significant amount of heat leaves through the head and neck.
A hat with a brim does more for comfort in sun than almost any garment change.
Unlined tailoring. An unlined or half-lined jacket in linen or tropical wool is wearable in heat; a fully lined worsted one is not.
Footwear that breathes. Leather and canvas breathe; synthetic linings do not. Loafers or sandals over closed synthetic shoes.
Natural fibre underwear and socks. The layer closest to the skin matters most, and it is the one most often synthetic.
The linen question
People avoid linen because it creases and then buy synthetic blends marketed as linen-look, which crease less and breathe considerably worse.
A linen-cotton blend is a reasonable compromise — some crease resistance, most of the breathability. A linen-polyester blend is not; the polyester defeats the purpose.
The better response to linen creasing is to accept it. Creased linen in July reads as appropriate; a crisp synthetic shirt with a damp back does not.
