Visiting With My Friend From Out of Town – Never Say Die Beauty

One of my close friends moved to D.C. a year and a half ago, and sadly, we don’t get to see each other very often. But whenever she drives north to take part in a ski trip, she often tries to stop to visit me either on her way to the mountain or on her way back. Fortunately for me, the conditions at Killington were rainy and icy  over the weekend (not good for skiing), and my friend arrived a day early. She’s staying till Thursday, so I think this is a week that I will take off from blogging.

My friend is an artist, and she likes to look at art in museums and galleries as well. On Sunday, we went to the Addison Gallery of Art in Andover MA where we saw a fascinating exhibit of the work of June Leaf who died last year in her late 90s. June Leaf was an early feminist, and much of her work dealt with the role of women in her contemporary world. She was also very interested in machines, and many of her sculptures were made from machine parts or were actually machines.  Plus, she was incredibly prolific, so it was a huge exhibit. Here are a few of her works starting with an intro statement. The first one is “Woman On A Tightrope”. Aren’t there days when that’s what it feels like?

Today, we went to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem MA. Sue (in the background of the photo above) is quite interested in the work of Dutch/Flemish painters from the 17th century, especially portrait artists. Even though I had seen the exhibit previously, I enjoyed seeing “Saints, Sinner, Lovers, and Fools: 300 years of Flemish Masterworks” with my friend to hear her insights.

Tomorrow, I have my fingers crossed for decent weather so we can go hiking in the hopefully not too muddy woods.

I hope you are having a good week, and I look forward to being back in touch soon.
