How To FIX Crepey Skin! – hotandflashy.com

What I Use To Keep Crepey Skin Away At 62!

How I Improved My Crepey Skin at Home! Before & After!

If you’re a “mature” woman and you have some crepey skin you’re not alone! Most women will start noticing that textured, dry looking skin on their arms, chest, and knees eventually.

Lately, I’ve been getting lots of questions about crepey skin: “What are we supposed to do about this crepey skin?” “What have you done about crepey skin?” “Why don’t you have any crepey skin?” and  “What’s your secret to not have crepey skin?” I always want to share my “secrets” because I want us all to be able to do everything that we can to look and feel our best

While I wish it was true that I don’t have any crepey skin, I do have some, but probably not as much as the average 62 year old woman because of the things that I’ve been doing for my skin, from the neck down, to really keep that crepey skin at bay.

I first noticed crepey skin starting to show up on my arms around my elbows and above my knees when I was 50. I was a huge sun worshipper for 50 years and all that sun damage was starting to show. Now I really regret doing all that damage to my skin and if you take away anything from this post I’d like it to be to protect your skin from the sun. If you have to be in the sun, wear long sleeves, stay in the shade and definitely wear sunscreen!

Causes of Crepey Skin

Sun Damage

The number one cause of crepey skin is sun damage. And if you’re like me and you have a lifetime of sun damage, then you are definitely going to start seeing crepey skin sooner than later. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin and damages skin’s DNA… that damage really accelerates the aging process.

Sun damage causes 90% of the visible aging on our skin. So the keeping out of the sun is definitely number one and something that you can do going forward. I stopped “putting my skin in the sun “tanning” about 12 years ago and started using sunscreen every day so I feel like I’ve mitigated some of that damage.

Aging

Another big contributor to crepey skin is simply aging. If you live long enough, you’re probably going to end up with some crepey skin. As we age, our body slows down the production of all the things that make our skin youthful. You don’t really ever hear of younger people (below 35), complaining of crepey skin because their skin is full of collagen, elastin, ceramides, & hyaluronic acid, all the things that our bodies make in abundance that help to keep our skin looking plump and firm. From the time we’re 30, we make less and less of all those things by about 1% a year, so that by the time we hit 40, we’re down 10% on all those things.

Menopause

By the time we’re 50, we’re down 20%. Once women hit menopause, all those things really fall off a cliff, and they decrease another 30% in the first five years after menopause. Menopause is a huge factor in skin getting crepey. The average age of menopause is 51, so by the time you’re a few years past menopause and your skin has really been deprived of estrogen for a few years, it is going to start looking crepey.

Treatments for Crepey Skin

There are lots of ways to improve crepey skin from in-office treatments like lasers and energy therapies to at-home skin care. I haven’t had any in-office treatments on my body skin so I’m going to concentrate on the at-home interventions I’ve used.

Moisturize

One of the most effective and least expensive things that you can do to help crepey skin is to moisturize it. If you’ve never used a body moisturizer and start using one, your skin will look and feel so much more hydrated and less dry right away. There are lots of great body moisturizers out there that you could pick up from just about any brand and slather it on, and it will help to hydrate your skin.

But at this age, you really want more out of your moisturizer than just making the surface of your skin look better temporarily, right?

You actually want to improve the skin’s structure by increasing production of collagen, elastin, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid so that skin will actually be less crepey.

Instead of a standard moisturizer, I recommend using a moisturizer with ingredients that increase collagen production, increase ceramides, increase hyaluronic acid, and can help with exfoliation, all things that are going to make crepey skin look better over time. Those ingredients are: retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Those are the same ingredients I use in my face routine and they’re great ingredients to use in your body skincare everyday.

Those ingredients are: retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide

In order to get all those ingredients into my body skincare routine, I use three different body lotions and I alternate days with them, putting one on every morning right after I get out of the shower. I apply my face & neck skincare first, and then I go right in with my body skincare before my skin has a chance to dry. Applying skincare on slightly damp skin is really important for absorption, and also for locking water into the skin so it doesn’t look as dry on the surface.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

My favorite crepey skin fighting lotion is Alpha Skincare Renewal Body Lotion it contains 12% glycolic acid and it’s formulated at a pH of four (very important for effectiveness). Glycolic acid helps your skin in three different ways: it helps with collagen production, skin cell turnover, and hydration. It dissolves the “glue” that holds dead skin cells on the surface, so immediately makes skin look less rough & dry.

Alpha Renewal Lotion is about 15 to $20 for 10 oz. It contains petrolatum, mineral oil and dimethicone so it’s very thick and very occlusive. It makes my skin feel so nourished and hydrated. It can be a little bit tingly if you’re not used to glycolic acid. I have to keep it away from my neck because I really feel it there. I’ve been using this for 9 years and it’s really diminished my crepiness and age spots!

If the Alpha Renewal is too spicy, you can get the Amlectin Lotion instead. It comes in a few strengths and contains lactic acid which is a milder alpha hydroxy acid than glycolic. AmLactin is mainly used for that rough, bumpy skin that people get on the backs of their arms (keratosis pillars) but it will also help with crepey skin in the same ways as glycolic acid. Added bonus, lactic acid also increases ceramide production in the skin!

Retinol

The next ingredient that I recommend looking for is a retinol. I use prescription tretinoin on my face, but you really can’t/shouldn’t use tretinoin for your body because it’s one of the vitamins that your body stores (vitamin A), and if you end up with too much vitamin A it’s not good for you. Retinol is a much weaker alternative to tretinoin but it does help with collagen production and speeds up skin cell turnover.

Retinol body creams use very low concentrations of retinol so they’re safe to use. Most products will have below 1% retinol, usually around 0.1%. I really love this Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol Overnight Lotion. In addition to the retinol, this also has niacinamide, glycerin, shea butter, jojoba oil, urea, a ceramide, and a peptide, so this is packed full of great ingredients. This one also is very thick, very creamy, makes me feel super moisturized.

Ceramides

The third body lotion that I just started using this past year is from Prequel. It’s their Barrier Therapy Skin Protectant Cream. This is a really great body lotion to have in your arsenal because this contains ceramides. It’s got 5 ceramides plus the cholesterol that it needs to actually deliver the ceramides into your skin. This is a very soothing lotion that will to help to repair the skin barrier. It also contains colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, and glycerin. Of the three lotions, this is the most lightweight and easy to spread.

If rotating three body moisturizers into your routine seems daunting and you’re only going to get one, I’d recommend the Alpha Renewal lotion. IMHO, it’s more effective than either of the other two, for collagen production and exfoliation to make the skin look better.

At-Home Devices

In addition to doing topical skin care, there are also at home devices that can help crepey skin look better. I stumbled onto one of them completely by accident a few years ago. I was testing an IPL hair removal device called Kenzzi. I used it for 12 weeks on my lower legs and noticed that it not only removed my hair, it also removed my age spots! I was like, wait, what is happening here? This is amazing! A lot of my viewers bought the Kenzzi and had great results with it, but a lot of my viewers also weren’t happy with the company so they asked me to look for something else.

I got a 2nd IPL hair removal device, the SmoothSkin Pure and I did another test on my legs but I also used it on my arms for spot reduction, and sure enough, it worked just as well as the Kenzzi at removing hair and removing age spots. But an added bonus that I noticed with this one is that it also helped with my crepey skin. I especially noticed it in the before and after pictures on my knees.

I was like wow, that is amazing! Look at the difference in my knees here. And I was just blown away by it. Between the two devices, I definitely prefer the SmoothSkin Pure. It was faster & easier to use, it protected my skin a little bit more and it gave me really, really great results on wrinkle reduction, crepey skin reduction and spot reduction (it also did an equally great job of getting rid of my leg hair). SmoothSkin Pure is more spendy at $299 compared to Kenzzi at $100 but both worked very well for me.

Red Light LED

Another at home device that can help with crepey skin is red light therapy, because it increases collagen production in the skin, and it’s also been shown to increase collagen density in the skin. Now, I haven’t used this anywhere on my body except my face, my neck, and my chest, and I think that’s why I mainly don’t have a lot of crepey skin in these areas as well, because I do use my red light therapy mask there.

My favorite red light therapy device is the Omnilux Contour Mask (code HF10 for 10% off). Red and near-infrared light has been shown to increase collagen production and collagen density in the skin. This mask is flexible, so in addition to using it on your face, you can also use it on the backs of your hands, you can wrap it around your arm or leg for a red light treatment anywhere on your body. There are also red light panels that cover larger areas.

I just bought a panel that I haven’t set up yet. It’s not big, but that could be a nice therapy for my arms and legs to continue to keep the creepiness at bay.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

One of the biggest reasons post-menopausal women have crepey skin is estrogen deprivation so supplementing some of that estrogen with HRT can definitely help. Hormone replacement therapy has been shown to increase epidermal hydration, skin elasticity, skin thickness, and also reduces skin wrinkles. I’ve been post-menopause for 7 years and on HRT for the last 4 so it’s probably helped my skin. If you don’t have a menopause doctor you can use an on-line telehealth service like Alloy for menopause medications (use code ANGIE10 for $10 off when you sign up).

Lifestyle

There are lifestyle changes that can help to prevent, minimize, and correct crepey skin as well. For prevention, wearing sunscreen or staying out of the sun is key. Sadly, my sun-worshipping accelerated the aging of my skin but wearing sunscreen for the last 12 years has really helped my skin to look less crepey and to retain more collagen.

Collagen Supplements

Collagen peptide supplements show promise in studies for skin hydration and wrinkle reduction but more study is needed to prove they really work. Nevertheless, I’ve been taking Vital Proteins Marine Collagen Peptides supplement for quite a few years now. I can’t say for sure if it’s helping my skin but I do notice a difference in joint comfort when I take it which makes me hopeful.

I put one scoop of Vital Proteins in my tea in the morning and then I’m done for the day. I take the marine collagen because the bovine collagen doesn’t agree with my system. There are collagen supplements that are specific for skin, hair, and nails (Version), and another for bone (Fortibone). I recently bought Native Path Bone Health Collagen Peptides to try that contains both. I’m not sure that that’s 100% necessary but thought I’d give it a try.

Diet & Exercise

I firmly believe that diet & exercise are so helpful for the skin all over our bodies. These are the changes that can be the most difficult to implement but they’re so worth it to do for overall health, longevity, and the look of skin!

Diet

There are foods that are full of antioxidants and omega three fatty acids that have been shown in studies to help keep skin healthier and looking better. I eat a ton of salmon and other fish, green leafy vegetables, I don’t eat a lot of meat, and I’ve reduced my sugar intake dramatically from about 150 g per day to 20g a day. Excess sugar in your diet leads to increased wrinkles and dark spots through glycation.

Skin healthy foods rich in antioxidants: blueberries, strawberries, green tea, dark chocolate, nuts, and legumes.

Exercise

Both weight bearing and aerobic exercise are great for the aging body as well as aging skin.

Aerobic exercise gets your blood moving and increases blood flow to the skin providing oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Blood feeds the skin from the inside so it can make more collagen & elastin.

Weight lifting increases your muscle mass and increased muscle mass helps to fill out your skin better so it’s not just laying there looking saggy. Weight bearing exercise also helps with bone health and heart health.

It’s never too late to start doing aerobic or weight bearing exercise. If you start doing it just for your skin, there is nothing wrong with that but you’ll also reap the health benefits!

Before & After Pictures

Keep in mind that these pictures are taken nine years apart. I am nine years older!

It’s funny, when I see my skin live & in person, I don’t think it looks creepy at all. So seeing these pictures, I’m actually like, oh gosh, my skin’s a lot creepier than I think it is.

The main difference I notice in these pictures is that while my arms are still creepy, they’re not nine years more crepey. I actually see a decrease in the crepiness of my skin and in the skin laxity’s well. Also, the spots are so diminished in the after pictures.

I think that’s mainly because of the Alpha Skin Care lotion, wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun even more than I was back then.

I feel like the hands of time have really just stood still on my body because of the things that I do for my skin. Overall, I feel like I’ve had really good success improving my crepey body skin.

When I turned 50, my skin was terrible because I roasted it in the sun and I was really, really mean to it. It’s taken me a few years to get it to start looking a little bit better than it was, and I’m so pleased with these results.

So, those are the things that I do. You can certainly do them all or you can pick just one to do. No matter what you do, if you do something for your skin, it will start to look a little better. Try to keep in mind that consistency is the key and that’s what’s going to help over time.

Nothing is going to work overnight. It does take a while to see results, but hopefully if you stick with it you will see the results over time. I hope this post was helpful and I hope you enjoyed it!
